100 degree TT

Ride got me: dehydrated
Ride-o-meter: 8
Post Subtitle: draining

Well I managed to make it to PECO by just a little after 5 pm. Too early to wait around for the ride to start so I figured I'd try to get the route in before 6:30 so I can say some quick hello/goodbyes, sign the sheet, and get home after a long trip. There were a lot of reasons not to go hard:

  • Fried legs from Asheville
  • The heat index was up over 100
  • Wind out of the south was gusty and hard
  • 6+ hours in the car
  • 5 beers the previous night

Mitchell Day 2 – Saturday

Ride got me: spent
Ride-o-meter: 9/7
Post Subtitle: a good joke on everyone

There was no su'plosions, despite Craigs best wishes. But by the finish today, the natural order of the universe had been restored and I resumed my rightful place in the peloton.

There was no podium finish today and I finished the ride at the back of the pack, content to just ride my ride and finish with a minimum of suffering. The day still had it's moments, and I also had big fun with what I learned from Eric Carmen's School of Motivational Psychology. More on that in a minute.

Mitchell Day 1 – Friday

Ride got me: cracked
Ride-o-meter: 11
Post Subtitle: sweet pain

"… this one goes to eleven".

I don't mean to brag… it's not my style. I'm more of the self-deprecating, 'thanks, but I suck' kind of guy. Nevertheless, that had to be the absolute best day I've had on a bike. Ever. Period.

RAIN Results

So they finally posted the unofficial official results of RAIN. PK and I were 168/169 of 854 to finish (1200+ registered) at 9.24 hours. That put us just on the edge of the top 20% on total time, which is exactly where I was hoping to be. Granted, we didn't optimize our stops or even consider total time. Had we done that, we could have been quite a bit higher. Thanks again, PK!

The #1 (through 5) finishers did 160 miles in 6.39 hours @ 25 mph. Holy shit…

50 the hard way

Ride got me: sleepy
Ride-o-meter: 8
Post Subtitle: good hard work

I got in 50 miles today, and I swear that 40 of 'em were in a headwind. I wanted to put in some good efforts today before the travel day tomorrow and some serious climbing on the weekend. Guess I got my wish.

Boring commute

Ride got me: jumpy
Ride-o-meter: 8
Post Subtitle: quick and easy (like Crilli)

Other than stopping by the bakery to pick up my stem shim for the Bianchi, nothing really to report. I did somehow manage a 19 average for the day, unusual for commuting. Wasn't working all that hard, just enjoying cooler and less humid weather (comparitively speaking).

Monday ‘spin’ ride

Ride got me: energetic
Ride-o-meter: 9
Post Subtitle: back to work

Jawoe on Rudy up to 571: "I thought this was going to be a spin ride"
Dobo: [laughs and points at Mike up ahead] "This IS Mike's spin ride"
Jawoe: "Bullshit"

Leiployd Leviflandisheimer

Well they can't get the names right, but at least he ended up on top.

It's a bittersweet tour. Ultimately what counts is winning the tour and Floyd is wearing yellow, continuing Lance's streak of American victories to 8 in a row and also making it 11 of the last 21. That's just gotta chaffe.

The slow lane

Ride-o-meter: 8
Post Subtitle: 1 more day of slacking

Friday was another easy(er) paced day. I had thought that PK, feeling a bit under the weather, was going to ‘ride slow in the driveway’ with me. [FYI: that's a reference to Rain Man and a joke between Cindy and I] But she felt good enough to ride with the main group and I started out real slow.
