February summary

I landed right on 1200 miles for the year today. There’s still one day left in the month, but here’s the rundown.

  • 600 miles for the month
  • 1231 miles – 365 above last year.
  • Completed my 2nd century of the year.
  • Commutes started out dismal, but I picked up a string of the last 6 and 7 of the last 8, netting very close to 50% for the month (7/15).

Freezing Rain?

Ride-o-meter: 8

Oddly enough, when I got done riding home from work, weather.com informed me that there was freezing rain. The radar looked positively scary, all pink and mean looking.
Hmm… I don’t recall anything resembling rain… freezing or otherwise. Must be up in the air but not reaching the ground. The ride home was cooler than predicted, but otherwise quite nice. In fact, the only problem I had was riding into town on Staunton St. w/ dark shades on in fading light and not being able to see the potholes very clearly. I managed to go around all but one, and it was quite small.

When a good day feels bad

Ride got me: blah
Ride-o-meter: 7
Post Subtitle: do the math

All the way home today I kept pushing harder and kept thinking “geez… you suck!”

I rode to and from on Troy-Piqua Rd. and was fighting only a moderate cross wind.

On the ride to work I was working against a head/cross wind and wasn’t really working too hard, not in a real hurry to get to the office. I rarely concern myself with performance on the way there anyway.

Monday blahs

Ride-o-meter: 7

Today was one of those typical I-didn’t-ride-all-weekend-so-now-I-feel-like-crap days. It was really indicated in the 83 average cadence. That’s just pathetic! It’s also what I get for skipping so-called EPIC Minster ride AND blowing off Coach Troy. Hey… I spent 18 hours working on my weekend, doing someone else’s job, and getting no thanks for it.

So tough

ToC: Stage 7 – Finale

Well it’s a done deal… Levi pulls off the yellow jersey win and leads from day one to today. Much less dramatic than yesterday, but still a great day of racing.

What was fascinating about the final results was that CSC put 4 riders in the top 6 (and won the team classification), to Discovery’s two. Of course Discovery put Levi in yellow and also Jason McCartney on the podium in 3rd, which is why I find it so interesting. The two top teams in the tour went head to head all week. The difference is how much work all the Discovery riders had to do all week in defense of the jersey. CSC had the luxury of spending a lot of time further back, waiting and watching for opportunities.

ToC: Stage 6

24 hours later and I’m not sure my heart has come back down from my throat or not. Stage 6 was a tense, and intense stage, as exciting as any I’ve ever watched. In February while we’re waiting for spring to arrive no less.

As if I needed that level of stress on top of working 12 straight hours (yet more work drama) on my Saturday. After being under attack the entire day, the Discovery Team managed to get Levi to the finish line safe and sound and maintaining his lead. But not without cost. I’m writing this quite a bit after the stage actually finished, and by now we all know that Big George broke a bone in his hand after getting tied up with a teammate. Tough guy that he is, he got back on his bike, got back in the race, went straight to the front, and worked his ass off to chase down the breakaway containing Stuart O’Grady. Awesome.

ToC: Stage 5 (TT)

Hee hee. Couldn’t wait to watch this time, since I’m heading out with the spousal unit for the evening. And since it’s the TT, there isn’t as much potential for drams.

The results are awesome though. Check this out.

Not quite Arby’s

Ride got me: chilly
Ride-o-meter: 8

After 2-1/2 weeks of no commutes, I managed to get 4 of 5 this week. Today was quite cold, but I didn’t mind much, the wind was light and it was pretty easy riding. With temps in the low 20′s I did have to be careful not to hit any wet spots, but the roads are mostly dry.

ToC: Stage 4

Not much to comment on for stage 4… Disco kept good control of the race and let Levi sit back. Heard the average was around 27 on the longest stage, so they weren’t messing around.

A few extra miles

Ride got me: contemplative
Ride-o-meter: 8
Post Subtitle: The wind is my… team car?

This morning I realized I had a doctor’s appointment at UVMC. At 1 PM. Which presents a problem. Do I log in and work from home until it’s time to go, then ride to the appointment on the way to work? Or do I ride to work, then come back to UVMC, then back to work, then home? The latter was very inefficient, as far as productivity was concerned, but netted me 10 more miles on the day.

Bet you can’t guess which option I chose. :riding:

ToC: Stage 3

Tried something a little different today. While I was at work I logged in to the Amgen ToC website and tried to watch the real-time race coverage with GPS locaters and live video. Bandwidth at work is good, but the feeds tended to crash occasionally. Probably high demand. I got tired of re-loading the browser, so gave up about halfway into the race. Besides.. it just ain’t the same without Phil and Paul (and Bobke)
