BIkeCentennial 200
Friday I noticed the following painted on the side of a barn:
Miami County Bicentennial
1807~2007
Hmm… Bicentennial… 200 years… Miami County… County Courthouse in Troy.
Bike ride… double century… 200 miles… 200 years.

There’s another day left, but it’s a rest day for me, so here’s a few stats for March.
March really held true this year. I looked back to the beginning of the month and read my whiny post about how the weather sucked on the 1st. In like a lion it was. And it continued to be a lion for the next 4 weeks. Some days were 75 degrees, some were 25, but one thing held true. We have had strong winds from every direction nearly every day all month.
That is until yesterday and today. Yesterday they were only around 8-9 mph and though just a tad cool, it was a very pleasant evening.
Today was about as nice as it gets. Temps were in the lower 70s as we started out, and held in the 60s until I got home. The winds were still ENE, but even lighter, almost calm at times. All that and sunshine too!
Today I intended on limiting my ride to only the two 10 mile commutes. All afternoon I told myself I needed the rest, and should go straight home.
Well, you just no that ain’t going to happen when it’s 65, sunny and light winds!

In the event that it is a gorgeous April Sunday day, I have my Foolish 100 route planned.
97 miles in roughly the form of:
The route isn’t fixed and in a few places I may use the bike paths, particularly from B’Creek to Xenia, so I’ll add on miles as needed to net 100.
I’ve taken the various non-organized centuries off of my calendar. I have basically decided that joining the UMCA and doing a century a month to meet some kind of contest rules is a little bit too much like work. Or racing, or training or maybe ‘organized sport’.
In other words… it ain’t ‘just for the fun of it’.
Today ended up being a bit of a rest day, although rest is a relative term. A number of events conspired to make me head straight home after work. The rest of this is mostly negative, so skip it if you aren’t in the mood for whining.

Well, the saddle is off the Bianchi and listed at eBay. I would highly recommend NOT bidding on it.
I wanted to ride a few extra miles to enjoy the continued nice weather. I got an invite from April and Angie to join them again after work, so that’s what I opted for. Since the Flyte is in a state of disrepair at the moment, I went out on the Bianchi again. What could it hurt?
Seems I may be coming up with more revisions to my post-Friday ride claims. First it was my estimation of doing 400 miles in a week, and now it’s my claim that I am comfortable for long rides equally on both bikes.
I rode the Bianchi today on what is my typical Monday: work-Process-Fred’s-home – 63 miles. We did the normal Green route and had a good group of 15ish. Lots of faces I had not seen since last fall. Fred was out which was good because I was about to go hunt him down. The weather was almost too warm, if that’s possible. Mid-70s in March can be hard to deal with simply because it’s hard to acclimate. I was of mixed feelings about the day.
“I hope your legs recover in time. As Paul Sherwin says, ‘you always have to pay it back’.”
That was a bit of advice from a friend on Friday afternoon.
Friday night I wrote a lengthy post that included an evaluation of how I felt after 300 miles in 5 days. And I had grand plans for finalizing the week with a full century.
Needless to say I was overly optimistic. As I also said my evaluation was subject to revisions, and that my week wasn’t done. Well… I’m revising it. My week is done.

Piling on miles got me to the next milestone quite a bit earlier than I had figured. Sweet.
I am also now 500 ahead of last year to date. That should pretty much stabilize for the rest of the year, because last April was when I started hitting the 1000 mile mark consistently each month. And all button pushing aside, I don’t foresee any reason, desire, or time to go beyond that.
Forget the 100 cheese sticks at Arby’s. I’ll stick to 100K Arby’s 5 for 5. For those new to the program, any time I make a whole week of commutes to work without driving an ‘Arby’s week’, 5 out of 5 days. This week I did that in spades.
All week I have been tempting the fates by flaunting my good luck at getting dry weather despite tons of rain, flooding, and general gloom and doom. Today started out no different. It rained buckets all night and morning, and my yard looks more like a moat than a yard. Yet once again, no sooner was I getting ready to ride to work, the rain stopped, the skies cleared, and the sun even poked out for a few minutes as I got close to Troy.
Not a half hour after I got safely to work, it began to rain again. No lie… this has happened literally every single time I go to ride, all week long.
