Raleigh Alyeska 198four

The quest has taken a detour, but closer to historical accuracy.

The one thing about the 1985 Alyeska was that I didn’t remember the model name so boldly written on the frame. The reason is because I didn’t have a 1985, I had a 1984. That makes sense. I would have seen the bike when it came out, but had to save enough money to buy it. Back then that would have taken all winter.

1984 Raleigh Alyeska Touring 18I realized this when doing more searching and came up with a Philadelphia CraigsList ad:

174(ish)

On the slimminisms front, this week the weight loss slowed down a little, but I’m still making progress. What I have found is that there are definite trends during the week and that Wednesday mornings are probably the most consistent and best to use as a weekly progress checkpoint.

End of normal week #2

If this week wasn’t a carbon copy of last week, it was darned close.

235.36 miles, compared to 235.10. Same 5 days, same routes, same ‘rides’, same weather patterns, same weight trends, same avg. cadence. The only difference, on paper, was this week was about 1/2 mph faster.

It’s not Arby’s, it’s BlackJack!

Post Subtitle: Mid-year is here

Today marked the last work day of June, and I ended up w/ a perfect month of commuting. I say BlackJack because there were 21 biz days in the month and I didn’t drive any of them. One vacation and one personal day meant only 19 rides, but I thought “Hey nineteen” would go over some people’s heads (Steely Dan – you young punks).

The current commute streak is at 25, double my previous longest.

Convergence

Ride got me: contemplative

Today it was 2007, 1991 and 1985 all mixed together in a wonderful poetic way.

As you may have read in the Fred’s Ride message board emails, our new ride buddy John is in the market for a new bike, but has been riding, quite well, on a Trek that’s older than he is. All the retro nostalgia has made me really miss my Raleigh Touring bike that was stolen back in college.

On a whim, I did a Google search for classic Raleigh’s and I couldn’t believe it when the first link was for the following:1985 Raleigh Alyeska Touring 18

My shocked reaction was, hey, that’s my bike! No.. not the actual one that was stolen, but that it is the exact year and model… in pristine original condition.

I have to have this bike! I have emailed and called. The only problem is that the bike is in Utah and the Craig’s List description makes it sound like the person selling may have been thinking only locally. Packing up and shipping a bike can be a pain. I sure hope he responds. Hell, I may just drive to Utah to go get it. That’s how excited I am about the whole thing.

Heart Rates

Lately I’ve been running the HRM for the entire ride/work day. Today was a fairly typical long day, and here’s what the data says my average HR was.

  • Ride to work: 130 over 10 miles
  • Work day: 60 over 5 hours
  • Ride to PECo: 115 over 9 mile
    (plus waiting on a train)
  • Fred’s Ride: 151 over 25 miles
  • Ride Home: 140 over 19 miles

To wet, or not to wet

Rode to work. Muggy, warm, gross, but didn’t get wet.

Rode home from work. Muggy, warm, gross, but didn’t get wet.

Went to swim. Another long one same as last Thursday. Identical sets, pretty much same results.

Awesome crappy day

Ya just gotta love days where conditions suck, you don’t feel so great, you’re ride looked bad on paper, yet you have a great day anyway. This was one of those days. Turned out to be EPIC!

Oh, yeah… I forgot

Just noticed that I hit 1000 miles for June on my commute yesterday. Hooray for me. Most miles in a month is 1210.65 last October, courtesy of CFC (2nd half), Hilly 100, and the Triple Lindy Loops 100. Today’s ride puts me at 1075, so if I wanna beat 1200 I’ve gotta ride a full Friday.

Ugh

It was a pretty nice day today, for August. For June, not so much. Ride to work was hot and sweaty, even at 16mph. Ride home was the same. I can’t believe how much trouble I’m having breathing with otherwise so little effort involved.

More site updates

I keep juggling the sidebars on the blog, trying to find a good balance of features and usability. I got rid of the faulty weather.com bar after determining the problem was definitely not in my own code. Instead I went with accuweather.com. I like their service better anyway, even paying the pricey annual cost of premium service. They only recently added a format that fits in my sidebar. I also think it is cool that they include a basic radar image.

Inno ups ‘n downs

The Inno saga continues.

On Friday I tried it and assumed it to have dried out and fixed itself, since it powered on OK. Today however, I found I was wrong.
