July roundup

Another month of riding has come and gone, and here are a few notes and stats about July.

My last full week of the month finished over 300 miles, put me over the top of last year, and left me just 4 miles shy of 1000 with two days to ride. I ended up with 1080, not quite 100 more than the previous year.

I am running about 500 miles ahead of 2006. That had been hovering at 350-400 for the last 3 months and took a jump this month. August was my lowest non-winter month last year, only 900 miles. It will probably be a bit lower this year too, but still will likely be at or slightly above 1000. Depends on how much I actually taper for the GBC and if I take the bike on the houseboat trip or not. I’d like to get out one of those afternoons while everyone else is skiing and head over to Daniel Boon Nat’l Forest.

Commuting on Alyke

Turning Alyke into the commuter bike has been interesting. Though I suppose I didn’t really ‘turn’ her into anything. I simply get on and ride. (…)

100% July

With today’s ride to work I have finished July w/ 100% riding and no driving to the office. (…)

The rest of the story…

This one’s just for the Hillmaster, who pointed out he didn’t like the short, unformatted excerpts of the main page of the journal.

I didn’t either but hadn’t found a good solution.

Stem Sell Research

Well… it’s been about two weeks since I put the longer 110mm stem on the Flyte. And so far my wrists have been hurting ever so slightly after going I don’t know how many months without even thinking about them. That would indicate that my experiment failed and I should go back to the 90.

The only problem is that these little test scenarios are rarely so simple. Like I said in the previous post, no one event exists in a vacuum.

Perspective: 10 seconds

I keep reading about how Levi would have been 2nd on the podium instead of 3rd, had he not received a 10 second time penalty for hanging onto the team car following his ‘chain reaction’ on Stage 12.

I also keep reading about Cadel Evan’s statements about Contador having Rasmussen to ride with  and/or behind, as if that gave him a boost. The implication is that had Rasmussen not been there, Contador would not have gained as much time.

Easy Monday

After not having a very good day on Sunday I was curious to see how Monday would turn out. As I rode in to work I got my answer. I felt OK to just ride an easy pace but was in no hurry to hurry.

Sometimes things change during the afternoon, but I rode out to Process feeling pretty much the same way.

Perspective: 31 seconds

Here’s a fun little bit of math to think about.

The difference between 1st and 3rd on the podium was 0:00:31.
The average speed of Alberto’s entire Tour de France was 24.22 mph.
At 24.22 mph, 31 seconds is about 338 meters (1109 feet).

The length of the entire tour was 3547 km, roughly 2200 miles.

Everbody wins (again)!

Well.. once again Craig and I managed to finish up the day tied on mileage for the year. Taking it out to the decimal points he is ahead by .18.

RELAX, Craig! No trainer or trips around the block necessary. I’ll be Cadel and concede the contest – for now.

Perceptions of Bicycle Safety

I recently got an email from my mother, who is ‘allowed’ to read my blog under the condition that she does not comment. Nothing could wipe out my street cred’ than having mom start telling childhood stories or something.

Street cred’? Huh? You know what I mean.

Flyte Shite

Forgot to make note of the return of my creaking noises in the Flyte. After I split from the Minster group I went up Patterson-Halpin (aka ‘the backside of Bunker’ and as soon as I got out of the saddle, my creak had returned!

ARRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHH! As if I weren’t having a tough enough day already… there’s NOTHING worse than bike noises (non-standard one’s) to compound things.

With “Friends” Like These

Ride-o-meter: 6

The old adage is true… who needs enemies?

My day started out all wrong and just kept getting worse.

The alarm went off at 8:30, like it has every day for the last 3 weeks. Only today I didn’t want it to. So I shut it off and went back to sleep. Next thing I know it’s 10:45. Weird. And crap.
