83 Mile Commute

So Thursday I’m riding home from a ride with my sister, and I start thinking about my shoe issue.

It occurs to me that out of all the suggestions I got (and thanks by the way!), nobody mentioned Bicycle Stop in Springfield.

Further… it occurs to me that it would be good to ride there instead of drive.

Friday Comes Early

Got an invite to ride out at Process this evening and since I couldn’t go Friday, it worked out perfectly. My sister was heading north to arrange a cake pickup with Cindy, so we met up and did the white route.

I was all excited to get my weekly planned miles back, and even more excited it was only 77 degrees. I was NOT excited to find out there was a 500mph north wind. But we dealt with it.

EVERY Ride?

Ride-o-meter: 6

We say that “every ride is a good ride”, simply because the alternative is not riding at all. I tried very hard all day to tell myself that was true, and I’m still trying to tell myself.

‘Myself’ is very tempted to take ‘I’ out back of the barn and beat the shit out of me.

Recovering from Injury

Just read an article on the Pez Cycling website about recovering from injuries. That’s a particularly appropriate topic and well-timed given mine and other rider injuries recently. I think at least half of our group is in some phase of injury treatment, some mild, some more severe.

Here’s the beginning… Read more on Recovering from Injury…

5 Pounds in 4 Days

I left for Tennessee on Friday morning weighing 168 pounds.

I came back from Tennessee and weighed 173 pounds on Tuesday morning.

A net of five pounds in four days. Wow!

Doping: the Lighter Side

Was watching “The World Stands Up” on BBC America… more or less a British version of Comedy Central Presents. The standup in particular was Sean Meo, and I got to a bit that went something like this:

Changing the Game

You may have noticed that the mileage totals are gone from the site.

“Why”, you ask? It’s a secret. I’m not tellin’.

Somebody said “bring it”. So I’m bringin’ it.

Back to Normal?

Today was the first time in about a week and a half that I did a normal length ride for that particular day of the week. A simple ride to work and back.

On the plus side… no ill effects from my century and no recurring pain. Just a little overall fatigue and a little leftover soreness. Also.. on a couple of occasions I accelerated to make trafiic lights and found myself going about 30 mph without actually attempting to hit that mark. Couldn’t hold it for very long, but the top end speed is definitely going up with the lighter weight.

Life Sentences

“The bicycle enables us to escape many other machines: We use it for transportation, sport, recreation, and make it a way of life.” – Jobst Brandt

That’s one of the many quotes I use on my “They Was Sayin’” feature. It occured to me how remarkably similar that is to what is written on our T-shirts… Read more on Life Sentences…

Houseboatin’

This is supposed to be a cycling blog, but I occasionally veer off towards other topics, and our houseboat vacation is one of them. Besides… most of this leads up to a ride description anyway. It’s all about the bike, right? Bear with me.. the first part of this ain’t about bikes or even boats for that matter. In fact, very little of it is of any real interest to anyone but me. I want it as a reference for future vacations and ‘rest periods’.

Dale Hollow Adventure

Ride-o-meter: 6 and 10

When I decide to get back on the bike, I don’t mess around.

After 4 days of near-idle resting, I had had enough and went out to ‘test’ my recovery. I waited an extra day down in Tennessee, lounging on Saturday. I then headed out for a ride on Sunday. The original plan had been to ride a loop around Dale Hollow, the lake on which we were house-boating. The shortest route I could come up with was just shy of 80 miles, so that was my minimum distance.

I’m NOT an Idle Person

I seem to remember writing that a few days ago. I was fretting over having to sit around on a houseboat for 4 days (3 actually) and not being able to do anything active.

balancing act Perhaps I was wrong? In fact, I adapted to houseboat livin’ pretty easily.
