The Bet

So, how does one stay motivated during the winter months?

Craig’s got himself all pumped up about no pop and no snacks, and cross-training with Taebo DVDs. He’s a mutant though… he stays motivated regardless.

Vince, Todd and Shane are out doing MB trail rides on weekends. Don’t know how long that will last, but I assume my threatening Vince with the potential embarasment of getting beat by me on an April TT will be enough to keep him going.

Hallowiindy Ride

This morning was a little milder than the past couple, and I was fortunate enough to head to Troy before the wind kicked up. There must have been some headwind, though. I couldn’t exactly feel it, but my average was sufficiently low that I must have been working.

The ride to Process was another story. The SW wind was really kicking and my pace was anywhere from 12-16, sometimes sideways. I got out there to find Craig, T-Bolt and Bud, and we were joined at the last minute by Tim who brought his big ol’ van into the parkin’ lot squealin’ on 2 wheels. Go Tim!

Innoworkin’s

Well, looks like I got lucky this time. The Inno dried out and works just fine.

When I remember to plug the thing in and recharge it that is. Gotta take the charger to the office, since I’m more likely to remember it plug it in there – while I’m stuck in a 3′x3′ square – than when I come in the house.

Temp’rature Swingin’

Today was a fun one to plan out… 32 degrees in the AM. Mid-60s in the afternoon.

When the difference is 10-15 degrees, I usually just dress to split the lower side of the average, then shed a couple items, and carry them in the pockets.

But 30+ degrees? Instead, I dressed up toasty warm, over-dressed even. It was a light effort day and I didn’t want to work to stay warm. I stuffed a duffel bag in my back coat pocket. Then on the way home I went in shorts, jersey and long sleeve base. Every thing else went into the duffel and thrown over my shoulder.

Path Scenes

As performance oriented roadies, we occasionally joke about path rides, but, as everyone knows, I use them quite frequently, particularly the local ones in Piqua and Troy. And I’ll tell ya, some of the best scenes I’ve ever run across occur on the bike path.

Monday for example… I’m riding home from work and decide to take the long way around, pushing the 10 mile commute up to 15. I come around the base of the levy in downtown Troy and look across the levy. I guess they call that little piece of grass and gravel in front of Araya restaurant Treasure Island?

Reason #437…

…why I love cycling:

It’s the best source to hear, or read, the word “rubbish” on a regular basis.

Example: Bjarne Riis [in response to accusations that he threatened Jörg Jaksche (such great names in cycling too!) not to speak out about doping.] Read more on Reason #437……

WeatherWarrior

Quick Quiz…

  1. What is the biggest problem cyclists have when climbing on mountain trips in early spring, fall or at high enough elevations?
  2. What is the biggest problem cyclists have in the spring and fall when the days warm up eventually but they need to start a weekend ride or daily commute early?

Exactly… cold on the torso. When climbing in cool air, it’s the descending. On cold mornings it’s the dilemma of how much gear to put on, starting out warm and then carrying all that stuff you don’t need the rest of the day.

And On The Eighth Day…

…I don’t know what God did.

…I don’t know what Jesus would do.

What I DO know is I am NOT going to push it to 8-in-8.

I’m soooooo close to 10,000, I was seriously tempted to keep going strong and hit it before I leave on the cruise.  Instead it will be a fun milestone for the week after we get back.

Here It Comes

Winter may be 7 weeks away, but the first cold related advisory has arrived.

That’s OK. The sooner it gets here, the sooner it’ll be March!

The Inno That Loved Water

I don’t know what it is about this stupid Inno, but it insists on finding ways to get wet.

On Wednesday I got the new battery and put the whole thing in my vest pocket, but didn’t use it on my way to work. I wore it briefly out to Process and then left it off the rest of the day.

On Thursday I used it on the way to work. Then Cindy and I went on our outings after the open house  so I never wore it home. I did pack it into the duffel bag however. Or so I thought. When I went for my night ride I wanted to use the Inno, but it wasn’t in the bag. It wasn’t with the laundry that was in the bag. It wasn’t with the other things that were in the bag. The headphones were, but the unit/wristband was not. I looked around and decided it must have been left at the office.

Deja Vu All Over Again

Been reading last years posts and it’s amazing how the more things change, the more they stay the same. A couple blasts from the past.

“From the West at 32, gusting to 48 mph”

Dobodu

I have been so impressed by Goose’s worlds finish that I decided I might try a duathlon of my own.

What? Really? Well… yes. What happened to only running when chased? What happened to having my running career ended with the turf toe/knee problems way back in 1986/7?

More importantly, what happened to Biking Good, Running Stupid? Have I learned nothing from everyone else’s experience with injuries?
