April Wrapup

Wow, what a near-perfect month April turned out to be.

So nice, in fact, that I ended up with a perfect 100% on commuting for the month. Not to mention two trips to Bike Stop in Springfield as bonus ‘commuting’ miles.

So nice, in fact, that I ended up just 3 miles shy of my highest monthly total from last September. 1252 for April.

Only As Far As The Rollers

I know everybody is just brimming with curiosity to know how my injuries evolved overnight.

Did I find unforseen bruises and swelling?

Did I stiffen up and find myself unable to walk, let alone ride?

Who Let the Dogs Out?

The day started out great, but then…

Actually it didn’t start out that great at all, but riding to work made up for it. We had a meeting at the bakery with our banker and it’s never good to get a call from your wife at one location at about the time you were already supposed to be at the other. So I ended up making a bit of a dash out of the mile or so to Main St.

After the meeting, I found myself riding kinda fast headed out of town and started thinking if I picked up the pace I could maybe pull off that elusive sub-30 minute ride to the office. It would require a bit of luck with the lights, especially considering I had strolled down Main St. partially on the sidewalk.

Two Thirds The Man

Ya know that Nirvana song, Half the Man I Used to Be?

Well… that ain’t me. That’s Lance.

But, I can now say that I am two thirds the man I used to be.

235 was the max known weight when I started on my Atkins low carb diet back in July 2002.

Mother Nature’s Nut Check

Today turned out to be the exception that proved the rule… and bought me an extra day of recovery. But before I get to that…

I had mentioned there maybe being a surprise on Saturday, and sure enough, there was. Turns out my not-cold finally decided to become a cold. That wasn’t the surprise I had been referring to, so the joke was on me. What would Monday bring?

Once a Cheat, Always a Cheat

I’m not sure what to call a 200-miles-in-5-days week. I’d hesitate to call it a taper week, but then again, my average speed for those 200 miles is 16.8. That’s about 2 full mph less than a typical week. It is also 175 miles less than last week, and 100 less than the average of the previous 4 weeks.

So I guess it’s a taper week after all. Problem is.. it wasn’t a “quality” week. There has been very little intensity, only a few moderate intervals where I either pushed myself for a few miles or the wind pushed me to ride fairly hard.

Up From the Dungeon

I brought Alyke up from the basement today and took her out for a casual ride to work and home. Needed an excuse NOT to ride more miles on yet another ideal spring (summer?) day.

Red Throat, Red Route

It was another night of sore throat pain and constant sinus dripping. I wasn’t entirely sure I’d be riding at all. But this is definitely not a cold, so I wasn’t about to stay off the bike.

With most of the Cows on their way south to rip their legs off in Georgia, I had been planning on joining Hillmaster & Co. for the evening. Then I got an email from my sister, asking about the See Ride for Wednesday. Well… there isn’t a See Ride, but there is Bud’s DCC ride at the same time, same place, listed as ‘All’. That appealed to her more than Frank’s potentially faster ride, so we met out at Process.

Scratchy Throat?

Woke up in the middle of the night with a bit of a scratchy throat and a bit of sinus trouble.

Woke up in the morning with the same.

Rode to work real easy, even into the wind, wondering if this is the beginnings of a cold or just a bit of sinus and allergy.

Course Cuttin’ Monday

Plan was to ride to work and home and give the See Ride a skip.

Things don’t always go to plan.

2nd plan was to go as far as the rollers and head for home.

Sometimes the 2nd plan works best.

Tours and Adventures

In looking at my calendar, there are distinct gaps in my plans. May is mostly booked up, as is July, and September offers more good ride choices than I can possibly choose. In June however, I have zero plans. The same is almost true for August. So basically every other month is figured out.

Time to fill in the gaps. Read more on Tours and Adventures…

Miami/Clark/Logan Adventure

Well waddaya know. I actually did my Saturday double metric as planned. Pretty close anyway. The miles were right, the destinations were right. The only thing that didn’t go as planned

Before I even get into the details, I have to extend heartfelt apologies to Crilli (and Rick, Kyle, Yasu and for that matter… every poor bastard that rode the Logan County race). My RAIN jersey worked some pretty good magic, but only for me. Apparently one has to be actually riding with me to enjoy the benefits.
