Good Vs. Evil

If you read the comments from Sunday, on This Has Been A Test Of The 7 to 1 Run/Walk Plan, you may have been amused to read where my “friend” Vince accused my “friend” Kathy of being Evil, since she dared utter the phrase, “It’s OK to miss a Ramble”.

Note that for the record, I am only quoting her, not repeating after her.

This Has Been A Test Of The 7 to 1 Run/Walk Plan

Sunday afternoon, Coach K came up to Piqua to join me for a path run(walk) loop. She’s running the Xenia Half Marathon next weekend and her training plan called for 8 miles. My “plan”, such as it is, called for 6 miles in March, and moving up to 7.5 in April. Being very close to April I decided it would be OK to bump it up to 8 total, but I’ve modified things a bit. I need to get my distances up, while at the same time getting realistic about walking.

So now I’m on the 7 to 1 Run/Walk Plan.

Super Short

Saturday I think I spent more time getting dressed to ride than I did riding. I went around the path for 6.8 miles at barely more than 25 minutes. Just to get some fresh air and strectch the legs a bit. It warmed up past 50 by noon, and was 55 when I went out at 1 pm. The threatening rain never really showed up. It sprinkled a bit while I was out but otherwise we got nothing until much later Sat. night.

Weather Window Watching

I’m not in real great need of a ride today, but I want to. An easy recovery pace for maybe 90 minutes or so. Since I don’t need the ride, I’m not going out if it’s cold. I’m not going out if it’s wet. And I’m certainly not going out if it’s cold and wet.

It’s a race of sorts.

Fixing Flats = 1 For 3

Here’s a scenario. You go out to your car, or van, or truck. You pull your bike out of the back, off the rack or off the roof. And you discover that there is a flat tire. Which is weird, because it wasn’t flat when you put it in the back, on the rack or up on the roof. I’m sure it happens quite often, and it’s happened to me on any number of occasions. In my case on Wednesday though, finding a flat tire was especially weird.

It was on the car, not the bike.

What’s Worse Than Riding The Day After A Ramble?

Running the day after a Ramble. I am finding that doing just about anything on Thursdays is going to be very difficult. I’m quite used to having a Thursday morning commute feel like an epic struggle, no matter how flat and easy it actually is. This Thursday was no different.

What I’m not used to is having a 3 mile run feel like an epic struggle as well.

Ramble Quorum

An email floated around this evening (and by that I mean Thursday) about a “make up” Ramble on Friday evening, in consideration of Wednesday’s bad weather. I laughed when I read that. I immediately recalled the general response by those of us who rode in the downright miserable weather of the first Fred’s Leg Breaker Challenge when somebody suggested a “make up ride” the following sunny weekend. I laughed even more when I read Vince’s emphatic reply, which was:

“Uh, Yeah, No.”

11 Days Off Is A Bad Idea

On Tuesday I found out what happens when you don’t run for 11 days and ride 500 miles instead.

It feels like crap.

I’m not sure which was the greater contributing factor, the not running or the big miles. Probably both.

Has Anybody Ever Seen…

…Frank “Rocky” Parsons and Craig Ferguson at the same time, in the same place? Every time I catch Craig Ferguson on late night TV, I could swear it’s Rocky.

OK, Rocky with an entirely different accent. And crazier hair. But still.

Day By Day

It’s been over a week since I wrote anything about training. Got caught up in work work and more work. I gotta give something up, and it sure as hell ain’t gonna be the riding! That’s means it’ll be the writing about riding. Running took a back seat this week too, which was was more or less on purpose. When Spring weather finally sprung I took advantage and got myself 313 miles. 530 in the last two weeks. I’ve pretty much exhausted myself and will dial it back this week and get back into the running and swimming.

Sundy March Madness Part II

Late on Saturday I got an invite from Vince that he and the other guys, including Willis (home from college I guess) were doing the usual Sunday ride up in Minster. I decided to stick with my plan. Despite the planned distance I was in no condition to be out attacking and hammering up hills. 100 miles solo is easier than 50 miles with them. “Easier.” I remember the thought I had early on Sunday morning quite clearly. “I’m going to go out for an ‘easy’ 100 miles”. I was even cocky about it… “How many people..”, I wondered, “go out for a century on a whim and consider it to be easy? Not very many.”

I have done easy centuries. This wasn’t one of them.

Saturday March Madness Part I

While riding with Sis and Angie on Friday, I asked why Sis was out on her TT bike. She mentioned the Colavita Time Trial being on Saturday. The first one of the series. She also said, “It’s gonna be cold as hell. There probably won’t be anybody there.” That got me to thinking…

Thinking: that’s usually where things go wrong for me.
