I had other plans this evening that kept me from doing my Friday night long run, so I moved it up a day and did my first double digit run of 2010. Ten miles even on the Linear Park in Piqua. The LP consists of a 5.5 mile more or less straight path that is built on an abandoned railway line, and another 5.5 mile loop around the city – following along two waterways. First, the Hydraulic, a man-made waterway that connects the cities reservoirs. And second, along the Greater Miami River on what used to be a canal tow-path.
Why I’m going into this much detail about where I ran I have no idea…

I showed up to ride with the Cows on Wednesday evening while on a business trip to Ohio. So it’s not called a Ramble any more. And it isn’t quite at Ramble pace. And you don’t get totally left for dead if you fall off the back of the group. Nevertheless, while it may be called the Wednesday Night Delight now, it had a lot of telltale signs of being anything but delightful. My heartrate was maxed out much of the time. My eyeballs were about ready to pop out of my head. I felt like throwing up. I got gapped… a lot. I got dropped… more than once.
Call it whatever you want.. it hurt like a Ramble.

No.. not the band. I’m not even sure what the band Sixes Sevens and Nines is.. I’ve just heard of them. My sixes, sevens & nines refers to the run distances I’ve done recently. Except it’s in the wrong order. It’s more like Seven, Nine and Six. Except the last one was six point two. and there was a one in there. and the one also had three miles of walking. Oh.. wait…there was a two in there also. So maybe the title should be Sevens, Nines, Ones (plus threes), Twos and Sixes.
Nevermind. Basically I’ve been running a lot recently. Read more on Sixes, Sevens & Nines…

After a full week of running and riding, I was due for a day off. Monday was that day. No plans to ride or run. And I was fine with that. Until it got to be 90 degrees outside. For the second day in a row. And even with the A/C on high, the little window unit in my living room can’t get the temp inside any lower than 80 degrees. Too hot to do anything but lay around and whine. Too hot to do anything outside. All of a sudden my rest day that I wanted to take became a rest day that felt like it was taken only due to outside influences.
I hate it when that happens. Now it’s not restful.

What? It’s only been one week since Fletcher Flyer and I’m writing my blog about it? Crazy, I know! The Fletcher Flyer is called a flyer because the routes are flat and fast. And by that I mean they are flat by Western NC mountain standards. And in my opinion, now that I have seen and ridden it, the route is fairly flat even by western Ohio standards.
At least the way we do rides… find every little hill in a given geographical area and cram all of them into one route, no matter how convoluted the map gets.

As of a couple weeks ago I had been doing fairly light and short runs of only 3-5 miles. I have had almost no problems with my plantar faciitis or other issues other than slightly tight and sore calves, so I decided to increase my miles a bit. A bit?.. hah! In one week I did 10k, followed by an 8 mile way-too-fast run, and finished up with a ridiculously difficult 10k trail “run”. Total for the week was 20 miles, more than double any previous week so far this year.
Sometimes I take that TS Elliot quote way too seriously. Going too far indeed. Read more on Run Week & Rock2Rock 10k Trail “Run”…

In an ongoing trend I am once again writing blogs for events that happened weeks ago. This one is about The Ruby Ride on May 21, which was from Franklin, NC. This is the town just south of me where I swim (increasingly rarely) and run on the Little Tennessee River Greenway (also increasingly rarely). The route map and profile showed that the century was only 94 miles long, and given my preference for not driving a bike to any location I can just as easily ride to, I opted to supersize the ride by about 28 miles, going for just a bit shy of a double metric. This also added in two climbs of Cowee Mountain, the latter – and harder – one coming about 115 miles into the day.
It seemed like a good idea when I started out.
